“Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy, and say to them, even to the shepherds, Thus says the Lord God : Ah, shepherds of Israel who have been feeding yourselves! Should not shepherds feed the sheep?

Ezekiel 34:2 ESV

The pastors of God’s people were doing a bad job. So God sent Ezekiel to prophesy against them. Shepherds are meant to look after sheep, but these unscrupulous pastors were fleecing their flocks.

A shepherd isn’t a butcher. When a shepherd who’s meant to care for the sheep becomes a butcher, something’s seriously wrong. These shepherds weren’t feeding their sheep.

Sadly, these kind of pastors are all too common today. We call them wolves in sheep’s clothing, who feed their flocks with platitudes and “get rich quick” schemes even as they fleece and devour them. Their condemnation will be well deserved.

Thankfully, the passage goes on to say that the Lord Himself will shepherd His people. The Lord is my Shepherd, is He yours? He’s the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for His sheep. All praise belongs to Him!

“Good Shepherd of our souls, please provide us with helpful pastors who will care for our souls as well. We praise You Father for sending Your Son to lay down His life for us. In His name, amen”
