And he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord God , you know.”
Ezekiel 37:3 ESV
This verse is from one of the most famous passages in Ezekiel, about the valley of dry bones. In this verse God asks Ezekiel whether these bones can live. It’s like nowadays going to a cemetery and asking if the corpses could come to life.
I love Ezekiel’s answer. I’m sure he was tempted to answer simply “erm no!” But he humbly and not presumptuously answered “Oh Lord God, You know”.
If we had eyes of faith, we’d see that unbelievers, the majority of people, are spiritual zombies. Naturally, we’re all spiritually dead. It’s only by the life giving Spirit of God that we can be truly alive spiritually.
At face value, this passage is about Israel, and how God was going to restore them from exile into their land. But in Christ, all the promises of God are “yes and amen” to those who trust in Him. So we can have faith in God to restore us from exile in this world to become part of the new creation.
“Oh Lord God, You know that nothing is impossible with You. Help us to believe it too, and trust You to save many more people in our day. To the praise of Your glory, amen”
