And behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.”

Matthew 8:2 ESV

It annoys me when false teachers talk about “declaring” God’s healing over people, as those Jesus is our slave. This humble leper seems to have a much better idea. He came to Jesus, he didn’t arrogantly command Jesus to come to him.

Secondly, the leper knelt before Jesus. He knew who the boss was in this relationship. He had the right posture, not just physically, but no doubt spiritually too.

Thirdly, the leper called Jesus “Lord”. He didn’t proudly presume that Jesus was at his beck and call. He knew he would only be healed if Jesus decided it was going to happen.

Finally, the leper knew that it was according to Jesus’ will that he would be healed, or otherwise. He was basically recognising Jesus’ divinity, knowing that it’s according to God’s will that stuff happens. And in the next verse, Jesus declares His willingness and heals him.

“God, forbid that we should presume to declare anything to You. May we recognise that You do the declaring and we are to do the obeying. Thank You for Your willingness to make us clean from the filth of our sins. In Jesus’ name, amen”
