Obey

by Robert

Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it in the hearing of the people. And they said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient.”

“Famous last words” comes to mind! The Book of the Covenant is summarised in the 10 commandments. Even more succinctly it means to love God wholeheartedly and to love others as we love ourselves.

Of course, none of us love God wholeheartedly or love others as we love ourselves, perfectly anyway. So the people of the Lord were being overly optimistic in their claim. We need to consider ourselves with sober judgement.

We also need to consider how the 10 commandments begin. “I am the Lord, who brought you out of slavery”. Our relationship with God doesn’t begin with our obedience but with God’s redemption.

We love because He first loved us. He’s saved us, therefore we seek to obey Him- not to earn His favour. We seek to obey Him in thankfulness to all He has done for us.

“Lord our Redeemer, how we praise You for our deliverance from slavery. Please help us to be obedient to You but above all thankful for Your love. In Jesus’ name, amen”
