The steps of a man are established by the Lord , when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.
Psalms 37:23-24 ESV
If we think that eating forbidden fruit is a trivial matter then we have too low a view of God and too high a view of ourselves. Eating the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil was like eating poison, it was catastrophic. But these verses show that our fall is not irredeemable.
We might often despair, even as Christians, about how often we still fall into sin. If so, let these verses encourage you. If you belong to Jesus, you will not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds your hand.
The image these verses give me is of a dad with his young child, walking along the pavement. The child stumbles, but dad has their hand so they don’t fall to the ground and get hurt. That’s what God’s like with us.
It might sometimes feel like life is random and meaningless. But these verses declare that the Lord can establish our steps. If He does so, no storm can destroy us. We will prevail for eternity in Christ our mighty champion.
“Dear Lord, thank You so much for establishing our steps. We praise You for holding our hands and picking us up when we fall. In Jesus’ name, amen”
