He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how.
Mark 4:27 ESV
The kingdom of God is like a man who goes out sowing seed. He sows, he waters, he reaps. But ultimately, he doesn’t make it grow.
He can sleep, he can be up and about his daily business, he can do what he likes. And the seed sprouts and grows regardless. There’s a spiritual lesson here.
I’m reminded of something Paul said: that he sowed, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. We can “sow the seed” of the word of God in people’s hearts. We can “water the shoots” of God’s word beginning to change people’s hearts. But only God can cause it to bear fruit.
It should be a priority for us to bear fruit for God. We can allow His word to be implanted in our hearts. We can water it and feed upon it. But ultimately, only God can make us fruitful- there’s no room for boasting about spiritual fruitfulness.
“Lord our God, please help us to bear fruit for You. May we plant and water Your word in our hearts, and so to reap the harvest of the fruit of the Spirit. In Christ’s name we pray, amen”
